which, built according to plans by Balthasar
Neumann, and boasting the splendid ceiling
fresco by the Venetian Tiepolo in the imposing
staircase, is, as an ensemble, the most beautiful
palatial building of southern Baroque, the former
residence of the prince-bishops, which has
been on UNESCO's "World Cultural Heritage List"
since 1982.

footsteps of Tilman Riemenschneider and

Fortress Marienberg and Tilman
Riemenschneider
The fortress Marienberg is the highly visible
landmark of the town. The first church of
Würzburg was built here in 704, and around it, in
the 13th century, the first fortified castle, which
was augmented and expanded
especially during the Renaissance and Baroque
eras.
Following the tour of the fortress, you will visit the
Mainfränkische Museum, which houses the world-
famous collection of the works of Tilman
Riemenschneider.
